Venitian
Marble Relief of St George and the Dragon
16th Century
Marble Relief
62 cm x 58 cm
(Stock no 8350)

St. George wears classical armour and rides a horse with an elaborate harness who tramples the demonic dragon at his feet — symbolising the triumph of good over evil. The naturalism in the depiction of the horse is contrasted with the fantastic form of the defeated serpent-like dragon. This embattled relief form would have been set into the depth on a wall of a domestic house in Venice, and related survivals can be found there today.
