Egyptian
Naqada Jar
4500-4000 BC, Predynastic Period
Redware Pottery
Height: 29 cm
(Stock no 8192)

Cooking and storage vessels in prehistoric Egypt were of pottery made by the coiling method. These fine Naqada I wares, often associated with the site of Badari in Upper Egypt, illustrate the advance in the ceramic arts throughout this early phase of Egyptian civilisation. The quality of these pots is impressive and concern with the aesthetic appearance of functional items is apparent. The surfaces are finished by polishing or burnishing and the decorative black top deliberately achieved by placing the upturned piece in soot immediately after firing.
