Chinese
Ding Shang period (1600-1100)
Bronze
Height: 10 cm
(Stock no 8038)

Although the objects from this period are shrouded in mystery, these ceremonial vessels are the principle art form of early Chinese civilization. These ritual vessels were used by the heads of noble families to burn incense and present offerings of wine and food to the spirits of their ancestors. They are cast in bronze with elaborate low-relief pattern on their surfaces. The surviving examples are from tombs: many no doubt made for burial and others used in ceremonies before being deposited in the grave. The form of the Ding are standardised shapes in Shang traditional objects, and this is an excellent example of its type.
