Walrus Ivory of the Virgin and Child.
French ‘Isle de France’ Circa 1320.
Height: 13 cm
Although the heads of the Virgin and Child are now missing the ‘contraposto’ form of the body is of the very finest quality. The gentle curved ‘swing’ of the figure is typical of Northern French sculpture at the beginning of the fourteenth century. The deep cutting of the drapery folds is extremely fine as is the detail of the dress. Although not complete, this work is a wonderful example of medieval French craftsmanship.
