White ceramic vessel with pierced handles
Stoneware

Richard has been exhibiting his brother's ceramics for more than ten years. Paul's work has been exhibited and collected internationally. He hand-builds his pieces, a slow process, rather than using a wheel or coil techniques. He then fires these ceramics at very high temperatures, sometimes many times.
A white vessel is dipped in a white slip (very wet clay), polished, and then refired, some times four or five firings, until the desired surface is found.
A colour vessel has been dipped in iron oxides or other compounds, and then dipped in a golden slip (very wet clay), polished, and then refired; again, there can be up to five firings.
Textures are applied using a variety of industrial tools, as well as traditional clayworking materials. He is very much inspired by Asian ceramics and other ancient, timeless forms.
