English
Angel on lintel
15th Century
Oak
Height: 16 cm x Width: 61 cm
(Stock no 8215)

This rare work comes originally from a chancel or ‘Rood’ screen that separated the nave of the church from the chancel. The carving would have been part of a frieze running along the upper register of the screen and originally would have been polychromed in bright vibrant colours.

During the Reformation the majority of church interior furnishings including screens would have been destroyed so the rare survival of this carving makes it all the more interesting. The features of the angel’s face are quintessentially English: simply carved with a naturalism rarely seen on continental examples.
