Follower of Leonardo (Milanese School)
Study of a woman or angel in profile
16th century
Study in black chalk
35.7 cm x 30.9 cm
(stock no 8265)

This drawing is a rare survial; a study on several sheets of paper laid down and joined, and most likely a cartoon for the head of a key figure in a large painting. The use of different pieces of paper suggests that this was not a sketch but intended to survive only long enough to mark out the underdrawing for a final work.

While the positioning of the head and the smooth modelling of the figure in the drawing are reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s work from the 1480s and 1490s, the treatment of her features combined with the later date of the dressing of her hair would seem more to indicate one of his followers, or a member of his school.
