Roman
Head of Dionysos
1st-2nd century AD
Marble
Height: 30 cm
(Stock no 8191)

A typical sculptural form in classical antiquity, a herm was the image of a god set on a rectangular pillar. It had a bearded face, armless torso and a phallus. They were associated with fertility and in the protection of orchards and vineyards.

He wears a berried ivy wreath and his long hair falls in two tresses to his shoulders. The beard and moustache form tightly curled ringlets around his smiling face.
