Nottingham
Alabaster relief,
Martyrdom of St John
15th century
(stock no 8268)
The sculptural image of the martyrdom of St John the Evangelist was rarely executed in the Nottingham alabasters, only two are listed in Cheetham's great inventory of English Alabsters. The destruction of images during the Reformation in England and subsequent years of iconoclasm meant that many pieces have been lost. This rare survival dates from the fifteenth century and is an excellent example of English medieval sculpture in alabaster.
