Height: 74 cm

Sedes Sapientiae: ‘Seat of Wisdom’. Carved wood with traces of original gesso and polychrome; some restorations. The Virgin would have had the Christ Child seated on her lap. The Virgin is depicted as if seated on the Throne of Solomon. This form of representation is intended to show the Virgin as the means by which divine wisdom is made incarnate in the person of Christ and on whom human wisdom depends. She is also a personification of the Church.
