In the fifteenth century, the cult of this martyr saint was spread in particular within the wealthy cities Southern Germany and Northen Italy through the charitable orders who used him as their patron in their devotion to helping the poor and curing the sick.

He is pictured in art with the gridiron on which he was martyred.
