Southern French
Figure of Christ, c. 1550
Pine
Height: 75 cm

Wooden statues of the cucifixion were widely produced during the sixteenth century in the south of France and the rest of Europe. The style and particularly the treatment of the face of this wooden statue links its origin to the south of France. Other examples similar to ours have been attributed a role in the performance of liturgical drama which reached a peak of popularity around this time, especially in southern Germany and the south of France.
