Roman Empire: Syrian, Portrait head of a bearded man

Provenance: Chevalier collection, Konstanz am Bodensee, Germany; purchased in Saade 1976. This head was added to this collection of antiquities, Chevalier collection, that was exhibited in Rheinische Museum Bonn, 1973; collection published in ‘Antiken aus Rheinischen Privatbesitz’, catalogue of the exhibition at the Landesmuseum, Bonn, 1973, pl. 368.
Sculptural portraiture developed in the Rome from the first century and continued for throughout the imperial era. The beard and hair cut suggest that this figure was either a philosopher or a poet.
