French
Head of a queen
14th century
Limestone, with traces of polychrome
Height: 24.8 cm
The limestone head of a Queen, perhaps the Virgin crowned as the Queen of Heaven, has a foliate crown with jewels that were most likely gilded. Traces of polychrome survive in many places and are best preserved on her face. Her mood of pensive concentration marks her wisdom, and her face is framed with elegantly carved hair, which most likely would have finished in plaits hanging at her sides, as seen on the Royal Portal figures at Chartres.
