French
Portrait of a lady
c.1560
Oil on panel
31.7 cm x 23 cm

This portrait of a female in elaborate dress belongs to the school of Flemish naturalism that dominated French portraiture at this time. This school has often been compared to that of the contemporary Hans Holbein the Younger, with which they share a keenness of observation; whereas Holbein's drawings are overwhelmingly linear, however, the French school has a subtly modelled light and shade.
