Italian
Painted jewellery cofferette
14th century
Pastiglia painted wood and iron lock
22.2 x 40.6 x 15.9 cm

During the middle ages, elegant boxes were often found in important households and used to keep jewellery and other valuables. Works of art in their own right, these caskets were prominently displayed and were lavishly produced to high standards.

Thought to be Sienese, this pastiglia casket has been created by applying a layer of gesso to the wood which is then carved and polychromed. The stylised Pagoda-like lid lends further interest to the retangular body of the box.
