Monumental masks were very popular objects throughout the Roman Empire. In the first century A.D. wax masks were used for funerary purposes, later these were made into marble masks in order to be saved for eternity.

This sculpture was part of a private collection of antiquities in Germany gathered together in the 1960s and 70s.
