Medieval beam with dragon heads
c. 1500
Oak
Height: 85 cm
The carved medieval roof beam has two dragon heads turned away from each other. These dragons have large abstracted eyes and open mouths carved all the way around the beam with large triangular teeth. The beam is fully sculpted on both sides and also the underside has a beautifully carved rose.
This carving relates to Château de Luynes chapel roof, where an example of a surviving 15th-century roof with similar dragons can be found intact.
