Head of a King
13th century
Limestone
Height: 35 cm
This head of a king is most likely from a complete figure. The details of the carving is very fine. The gentle curling of the hair away from the face and the serenity of expression are typical of the 13th century.
This medieval head of a young king, with carved 'jewelled' crown with floral detailing, is a rare survival from this period. Depictions of kings on medieval churches in France were of particular interest to iconoclasts during the French Revolution.
