A rare modelled head of a French medieval king wearing a crown.
This unusual work was most probably a working ‘modello’ for a larger sculpture. Scholars have always believed that such small scale works must have been made as sketch models for the larger stone works appearing in the architectural design of the cathedrals, abbeys, and churches.
