Alabaster sculpture of God the Father
c. 1380-1390
Alabaster; showing remains of original pigment on folds, seat and hair. Mounted on period velvet.
God the Father is shown seated on a throne, his bare feet on a mound, his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand on a book. His hair and beard are depicted in deeply undercut curls and his garments fall in ample, finely-carved folds.
Nottingham Alabasters were produced in the neighbourhood of the Chellaston and Tutbury quarries throughout the 15th century. Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum have examples of individual carvings in their collections.
