Richard Philp Gallery

English (Nottingham)
St Catherine
c. 1390
Alabaster
20 in x 10 in

St Catherine of Alexandria (4th century) is the patroness of philosophers, students, and preachers. She was condemned to death, and put on a wheel, but the wheel miraculously broke.

This large and impressive sculpture is carved in Nottingham alabaster, a soft stone material with a translucent surface. These sculptures were normally executed in large workshops of sculptors and exported throughout England and Europe.
